Today I Think I’m One Of The Luckiest People On Earth – But Let’s Talk About Where I Was On January 1, 2011
I was 38 years old and living in my parents’ basement.
I had no money and I’d just declared bankruptcy.
I had a job, though: an $8-an-hour, boring yet horribly complicated gig that I hated and was destroying my soul.
I had no girlfriend. Who wants to date a 38-year-old dude living with his parents?
And even though I was working my butt off writing every night after my horrible job, I couldn’t get a single agent to look at any of my books.
Which meant I couldn’t have my dream…
Of making a living as a writer.
Of traveling.
Of being my own boss.
Of having people actually READ WHAT I WROTE.
There’s a stupid myth out there...that you have to pay your dues.
Well, I’d been paying them a nickel at a time for the last 17 years, and I had NOTHING to show for it.
If you want to get your book out there and make a living off your writing, ‘paying your dues’ is NOT the answer...
I know, because I tried.
I gave it everything I had.
I gave it my BEST shot.
And it didn’t work.
Because I played by the rules and I did everything right...
I Ended Up With No Money, No Self-Respect, And I Hated My Life…
I hated it because I was actually WRITING a YA fantasy series and publishing it on Kindle, but I couldn’t get anybody to read it to save my life.
Let me tell you, there’s a BIG difference between putting a book out there…
And people actually buying it.
That first year I published 3 novels… and yet I only made $315.
I had goals, dreams and aspirations...I wanted more out of life...
And keeping on writing ‘the old way’ wasn't going to work.
So I did what everyone else out there does in this situation:
I started looking for a way out.
I found it in the Top 100 Free Books on Kindle.
#1 was a Historical Romance. It was free, so I grabbed it. (I was broke, remember. I couldn’t afford to buy a Kindle book.)
The free book was terrible. Bad writing, clunky dialogue, repetitive plot.
But I remember saying, “If THIS person can hit #1 on the free list on Kindle, then I can DEFINITELY write this kind of book and make more than $315!”
The only problem was, I’d never written a Romance.
In fact, I didn’t read Romance.
And I had NO IDEA what to do.
And I didn’t want to spend years learning how to do it.
I needed money, like, yesterday.
I made myself sick trying to figure it out.
I was talking to an old friend and he said, “Why don’t you just write it like a movie?”
Whoops. I left out a part of my story.
You see, right after college in 1995, I went to Hollywood to become a screenwriter.
I packed up everything I owned in my rickety old Mazda and drove cross-country to live out my dreams.
I spent the next 4 years trying to make it in Hollywood…and failing miserably.
I failed mostly because I had no mentor, I didn’t know how to ‘play the game,’ and because I had crippling social anxiety.
The one good thing was that I watched a TON of movies… I went to film school at a community college (I couldn’t afford the expensive ones)… and I wrote over 15 movie scripts in 4 years.
My old friend was from my Hollywood days, and he knew all about my screenplay writing.
“You’ve watched tons of movies with romantic storylines. Why don’t you just write this Romance novel like you’re writing a movie?”
And that’s when it all clicked.
You see, up until that point, I’d been trying to write books like I THOUGHT you were supposed to write books…
But what were the most financially successful stories of the last 50 years?
Movies.
And it’s easier to THINK about movies because you can SEE them and HEAR them…
And I had a lot of experience watching movies.
So I did exactly as my friend suggested…
I wrote the Romance novel like a movie…
And the results were EXPLOSIVE.
In the space of 2 months, I made $7558 on PASSION AND PRIDE… which was more money than I had made on all 29 of my children’s books COMBINED.
It wasn’t like I suddenly became a better writer overnight.

‘Writing A Book Like It’s A Movie’ Is The Best Way To QUICKLY Write A Book That People WANT To Read
Think about it:

Is it easier to describe something that you’ve SEEN and HEARD… or something you’ve only read about?
You’ve probably seen LOTS of movies… and that means you’ve got LOTS of information in your brain about how stories flow, how great dialogue should SOUND, and how you should FEEL at big emotional moments. For most people, it will be easier to write about experiences like that. -
When do we start SEEING and HEARING, and when do we start READING?

Your audience is readers, yes… but don’t readers still watch movies?
